Festival of the Sea, Scotland
May 23 - 26, 2003

This is a maritime celebration on a grand scale.

From the deepest ocean to the uppermost reaches of the estuary from fishing fleets to the study of the ocean floor it traces our relationship with the sea both past and present.

The harbor at Leith will be packed with vessels large and small sitting at anchor and creating a colorful backdrop to this maritime spectacular.

The stars of the show, the great tall ships will line the quaysides around Western Harbour, giving visitors an opportunity to climb aboard, talk to the crews and get an idea at first hand of just what life at sea on board these great giants is all about.

The spectacular finale at the end of each day will include music and sound effects that will ricochet around the harbor.

Cruising: Luxury, Adventure or Relaxation - Your Choice

Tour Hosts Review  by Sheri Leigh

Whether you are looking for a relaxing cruise through the rivers and canals of Europe, a final trip down the Yangtze before the Three Gorges are altered forever, exploring the heartland of America or a journey deep into the rainforest, Cultural Travels tour hosts can accommodate your every wish.

While the articles in this issue cover the world from top to bottom, including a journey around Alaska by ferry, chartering yachts in the Caribbean and South Pacific, a river boat journey in Mozart’s footsteps, a barge trip through the French canals, and adventuring south to the great white contentment of Antarctica, they recount only a small sampling of the water-oriented experiences that are available worldwide.

The hosts we review here are just a fraction of companies listed in our database. I encourage you to explore and discover the wealth of opportunities CulturalTravels.com offers for planning the trip of your dreams.

This month's tour hosts review:

Society Expeditions Pick of the Month
Specialty: Expedition cruises in Antarctica, the Pacific and Alaska and Far East
Why We Like Them: Twenty-five years as a leader in the expedition cruising field. Expert lecturers accompany each voyage and the small ship size allows travelers to reach out-of-the- way destinations. Organized daily excursions offer an outline for the trips, but the small group size allows for spontaneity to take advantage of unexpected opportunities.

France Cruises
Specialty: Luxury barge cruises through France
Why We Like Them: Representing over 30 different barges ranging in size from 4 passengers to 20, you can easily join a scheduled trip or charter a barge your own! Whether you choose to explore the Loire, Champaign, the Canal Du Midi or Provence, in moderate or luxurious accommodations, they have a barge for you. Planning a French canal cruise has never been easier.

Mercury International
Specialty: Theme oriented cruises
Why We Like Them:  Take your scheduled Danube River cruise, add a Mozart historian as guest lecturer, visit the same places Mozart did experience his music in the settings where it was originally performed and you have both a learning experience and trip back through time.
Article: "Cruising the Danube," and "Down the Danube in Mozart’s Footsteps"

American Safari Cruises
Specialty: Luxury Yacht Cruises in the Americas
Why We Like Them: They offer a wide variety of trips on their three yachts, two of which sleep 12 passengers and the third 20.  Luxury at its best whether it be traveling the islands of the Pacific Northwest, through Alaska’s Inside Passage, journeying from San Francisco Bay to the Napa and Sonoma wine country or a cruise along the coast of Costa Rica.
Article: "A Whale of a Time in Alaska"

Fathom Expeditions
Specialty: Antarctic expedition cruises
Why We Like Them: Specializing specifically on Antarctica and the islands of the southern ocean. For 2004 they have a special expedition planned which follows in the footsteps of the great explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. The ships sleep less than 50 passengers and were created specifically for Antarctic exploration. Special guests accommodate this journey to share their past adventures and experiences in the region.
Article: "Expedition Cruising to the White Continent"

Galapagos Network
Specialty: Expedition cruises and dive live-aboards
Why We Like Them: Three signature yachts with accommodations for a maximum of 20 passengers each comprise this dedicated fleet. Each ship is accompanied by two experienced naturalist guides and a crew of eight. Working closely with the Charles Darwin Research Station, the company provides an exception experience while strictly protecting the fragile environment of these unique islands. Trips available are for three, four, five and seven nights to fit any schedule.
